The year opens with a powerful Cancer Full Moon, setting the emotional tone for 2026 astrology. Heightened sensitivity, intuition, and the need for balance shape the first days of the new year. As planetary tensions stir the nervous system, this moment invites reflection, self-care, and cooperation rather than force. The Cancer Full Moon reminds us that steady grounding and emotional awareness can guide us through uncertainty.

Overview: December 29, 2025 - January 4, 2026
HAPPY NEW YEAR! According to the Gregorian calendar, we cross the threshold into a new numerical year this week. While the planets are unaffected by humanity's definitions and divisions of time, the collective consciousness focuses strong energies of anticipation about this transition from an old year to a new year. Sometimes the astrology supports that feeling of expectation—as it most certainly does this year, as we contemplate all that the planets hold in store for us in 2026.
That being said, we may feel some confusion or despondency as the new year begins. Mercury—the planet of rational thought, communication, information networks, travel, and transportation—forms hard aspects to Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune this week. We might experience limitations or unexpected delays in these areas, somewhat similar to when Mercury is retrograde. Our nervous systems (also ruled by Mercury) are likely to feel the stress of these aspects, so be sure to provide your mind and body with periods of relaxation, and perhaps take breaks from constant information input.
In addition, the energies of Wounded Healer Chiron are amplified throughout the first week or two of January, due to it stationing direct this Friday. Chiron reminds us of the need for self-care, often by triggering bouts of insecurity or fear—clear indicators that the child within us is overwhelmed and in need of our understanding and support.
FULL MOON: The lunar cycle that began with the eventful New Moon on December 19 reaches its climax this week. The Full Moon perfects at 2:02 a.m. PST on Saturday, January 3, when Luna is at 13°01' Cancer and exactly opposite the Sun at the same degree of Capricorn. This is another Super Full Moon—the fourth in a row—so once again the night sky will be brightly lit and the pull on our emotional bodies will be stronger.
A Full Moon is always enlightening in some way, and usually brings unconscious emotions to the surface; that quality is underscored with this lunation, which is in watery, sensitive Cancer and also widely conjunct expansive Jupiter. Intuition and empathy are enhanced with this Full Moon. It could be challenging to maintain clearly defined boundaries between self and other, or between the individual and the collective.
That being said, the objective, practical nature of Capricorn is also strong, with both Venus and Mars closely conjunct the Sun at the time of the lunation. These planets can help anchor us so that we do not get washed away by a flood of emotions. As with any Cancer Full Moon, the goal is to find a balance between being present with our feelings and being able to detach so that we can attend to outer responsibilities.
This lunation also marks the beginning of a several-week period in which the Sun, Venus, and Mars journey side-by-side. This stellium-in-motion (which will soon include Mercury) supports creating new alliances that honor each person's individuality, and finding ways to work together to achieve a shared goal..
DAILY ASPECTS THIS WEEK (December 29, 2025 - January 4, 2026):
Here are my brief interpretations of this week's most important aspects, day by day:
Monday
Mercury trine Eris, Mercury square Saturn: The urge to support a cause and proclaim a belief is strong, and yet there are obstacles to communications or resistance to the message we want to share.
Mars sextile North Node: Progress is supported when we patiently take one step at a time and let our hearts and intuition lead the way.
Tuesday
No major aspects are exact today.
Wednesday
Mercury quincunx Uranus, Mars sesquiquadrate Uranus: Nervous energy is heightened today. The mind may feel somewhat frazzled, and some may act impulsively or take unwise risks.
Thursday
Mercury square Neptune: We may feel a bit befuddled early in the day, or dream images could linger into the waking hours.
Mercury enters Capricorn: The Messenger Planet will journey through Capricorn from January 1 to 20. During this three-week period, our attention is drawn to practical matters and plans that need to be implemented if we are to reach our goals. We can accomplish a great deal while Mercury is in Capricorn, but could find humor and imagination lacking.
Venus sextile North Node: Compassion and connection are priorities now, and we may find it easier to forgive others.
Friday
Chiron stations direct: Chiron's influence is strong for the first 10 days of January, reminding us of the importance of self-care and of attending to the root cause of the fears and insecurities that may arise now.
Sun sesquiquadrate Uranus: An underlying restlessness and a need for freedom can inspire us to head in new or surprising directions.
Saturday
Full Moon: The lunar cycle reaches its climax at 2:02 a.m. PST today, when the Moon is at 13°01' Cancer and the Sun is at the same degree of Capricorn.
Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus: We may be drawn to new people or to new forms of creative expression now. There is a need to feel more freedom in relationship and financial matters.
Sunday
Mars sesquiquadrate Sedna: This aspect represents a conflict between our chosen, practical goals and our spiritual destiny. Irritations reveal where our energy might be misdirected.

If Your Birthday Is This Week (December 29 - January 4):
Partnerships, the arts, finances, and the balance between self and other are highlighted this year. You may find that you feel very passionate about a new enterprise or a new alliance, and yet you are also able to be practical and purposeful in how you approach the opportunity. However, becoming too absorbed in a new endeavor or spending too much time working could cause problems with family members and conflict with your own need for closeness and nurturing.
